By the water this summer

• Put on a life jacket
• Sit up straight and keep your shoulders relaxed.
• Place one hand on top of the paddle and the other hand about shoulder-width apart on the shaft.
• Dip the blade of the paddle into the water near your feet and pull it towards your hip.
• As the blade approaches your hip, twist your arm to help with the power of the movement.
• Once the blade is out of the water, rotate the paddle and repeat on the other side.
• Try to maintain a steady pace and use your abdominal muscles to generate power.
• If you need to turn the canoe, paddle harder on one side than on the other.

Remember to always wear a life jacket and be aware of your surroundings, including other boats and any obstacles in the water.

• Put on a life jacket

• Put the safety leash around the ankle.

• Place the board in calm, shallow water.

• Kneel in the middle of the board.

• Hold the paddle with one hand on the handle and the other on the shaft.

• Paddle a few times on your knees to stabilize the board.

• Place one foot at a time where your knees were and slowly stand up.

• Stand shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent and looking forward.

• Put the paddle far forward in the water.

• Pull the paddle back to about your feet.

• Lift the paddle up and repeat the paddle stroke.

• Switch sides occasionally to paddle straight.

• Turn by paddling more on one side or doing a sweeping paddle stroke backwards.

• Kneel down again when you stop or get off the board.
